GCAT HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT - ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION
Pollution has become a global problem, being one of the most important environmental risks for the population, especially for the habitants of large cities.
The European Environment Agency presented a report on air quality in Europe in 2019, where they studied levels of ozone, nitrogen dioxide, benzopyrene, carbon monoxide or heavy metals, among others. The results showed in Madrid, Barcelona and other Spanish cities are the head of contamination, without fulfilling the laxnormative of European regulations. Pollution has been found to be responsible for a high number of premature deaths, 20 times the number of traffic victims.
By changing the way we move, we can achieve multiple personal and population benefits, such as an increase in physical activity levels and a decrease in air pollution and noise. The high pollution the population is exposed to is linked to a wide variety of health problems, such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. There are many short and long term effects of air pollution on people's health, the following figure summarizes them.
